• Never trust a previous backup until it has been thoroughly tested and found to be working and free errors. Most cases where Expidata have been called in to help recover lost data stem directly from work being carried out on an active server in the belief that a backup exists and works without any testing being carried out.
In the case of data loss from Microsoft Exchange:
Backup all of your log files (.log) and stream files (.stm) (where applicable) as well as your priv.edb or priv1.edb database file before carrying out any file system repairs or running any of Microsoft’s Eseutil or Isinteg. Both Eseutil.exe and Isinteg can delete information that is critical to the successful recovery of your data, this process often includes the deletion of log files that can be critical to recovery attempts if your .edb file is heavily damaged.
It is important to note that Eseutil is not guaranteed to successfully recover your data in all cases. Most Jet errors (jet errors being low level database errors cannot be recovered by this utility which can, in many cases make matters much worse.
Examples of such errors that Eseutil.exe will not be able to help with include:
JET_errRecordNotFound
JET_errKeyDuplicate Illegal duplicate key
JET_errReadVerifyFailure Read verification error 4294966278
In the case of the last error special care should be taken a this may indicate a media degradation or bad sector fault on one or more of the hard drives in your server.
